Summary
Presents statistics on the population count of the United States based on data from the decennial censuses, 1790-2010. Statistics on the population count and areal size of the United States are based on data from the decennial censuses, 1790-2020. The Census of Population and Housing counts every resident in the US every 10 years, as mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution. The data collected by the decennial census are used to determine the number of seats each state has in the US House of Representatives and to allocate federal funds to local communities. Area data are drawn from statistics reported in the US Census Bureau Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2012. Area reported includes Alaska beginning in 1870 and Hawaii in 1900. Beginning in 2020, data sources are the 2020 Census of Population and Housing and Census Gazeteer files.
