- Summary
- Reports the heat content in coal shipments to the electric power sector, which comprises electricity-only and combined heat and power(CHP) plants whose primary business is to sell electricity, or electricity and heat, to the public (corresponding to North American Industry Classification System 22 plants). Heat content refers to the amount of heat energy available to be released by the transformation or use of a specified physical unit of an energy form. The amount of heat energy is commonly expressed in British thermal units (Btu). Note: Heat content of combustible energy forms can be expressed in terms of either gross heat content (higher or upper heating value) or net heat content (lower heating value), depending upon whether or not the available heat energy includes or excludes the energy used to vaporize water (contained in the original energy form or created during the combustion process). The Energy Information Administration typically uses gross heat content values. Values are reported by coal type and by plant state and census division. Provides detailed quarterly and annual statistics on US coal production, exports, imports, receipts, prices, consumption, quality, stocks, and refined coal. Data on US coke production, consumption, stocks, imports, and exports are also reported. Data are collected via survey reports conducted by the Energy Information Administration (EIA). For information on the geographies represented in this dataset, visit the EIA Energy Glossary, available at https://www.eia.gov/tools/glossary/, and select for Census Divisions, Coal-Producing Regions, and Coal-Producing States.
