- Summary
- Provides estimates of the number of couple families with children in Australia, by weekly family income and labor force status of the parents/partners. Total weekly family income is the sum of the total personal weekly incomes of each family member present in the household on Census night. Family income only applies to classifiable families in occupied private dwellings. If any person ages 15+ is temporarily absent, or does not state their income, then the value is not derived for that family. Total income, also referred to as gross income, is the sum of income received from all sources before any deductions (eg, income tax, the Medicare Levy, etc.). Income includes wages, salaries, regular overtime, business or farm income (less operating expenses), rents received (less operating expenses), dividends, interest, income from superannuation, maintenance (child support), workers' compensation, and government pensions and allowances (including all payments for family assistance, labor market assistance, youth and student support, and support for the aged, carers and people with a disability). Labor force status is a derived variable that classifies all people ages 15+ as employed working full-time, part-time, or away from work; unemployed looking for full-time work; looking for part-time work; or not in the labor force. The category "Employed, away from work" also includes persons who stated they worked but who did not state the number of hours worked. Labor force status is derived using responses to questions on: full/part-time job, job last week, hours worked, looking for work, and availability to start work. Counts are based on place of enumeration, ie, the place at which the person is counted on Census night, which may not be where he/she usually lives. The Australian Census of Population and Housing collects a range of demographic, social, and economic information on Census Night. All persons and dwellings in Australia and the external Territories of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) islands on Census Night are counted, excluding diplomats, their families and diplomatic dwellings, and visitors from overseas who are not required to undergo migration formalities, such as foreign crews on ships. Visitors to Australia are counted regardless of how long they have been in the country or how long they plan to stay. Australian residents out of the country on census night are out of the scope of the census. Results provide a reliable basis to estimate the population for each state and territory and local government area for electoral purposes and distribution of government funds. The census also provides the characteristics of the Australian population and its housing for small areas and small population groups to support the planning, administration, and policy development activities of governments, business, and other users. Following the 1961 Census, Australia has had a census taken every five years. Statistics are available for the nation as a whole, and for states, territories, Statistical Area Levels 1-4, and additional subnational geographies. For information on Australian statistical geographies, please visit https://www.abs.gov.au/websitedbs/D3310114.nsf/home/geography . The census uses Australian Standard Classifications where available and appropriate. Where an Australian Standard Classification is not available, classifications specific to census variables have been developed.
