- Summary
- Provides estimates of the number of private occupied dwellings in Australia by household and family composition. An occupied private dwelling is a private dwelling occupied by one or more people. A private dwelling is most often a house or flat. It can also be a caravan, houseboat, tent, or a house attached to an office, or rooms above a shop. Household composition indicates whether a family is present or not and whether other unrelated household members are present. Families are classified in terms of the relationships that exist between a single family reference person and each other member of that family. The Census Family Composition (FMCF) variable distinguishes between different types of families based on the presence or absence of couple relationships, parent-child relationships, child dependency relationships or other familial relationships, in that order of preference. FMCF is derived from people enumerated in the household who usually reside there, and who share a familial relationship. Partners and dependent children usually present but temporarily absent are also included in this derivation. A maximum of three families can be coded to a household. Lone-person households can contain visitors. Visitor-only households can contain overseas visitors. For Census purposes, the total number of households is equal to the total number of occupied private dwellings as a Census form is completed for each household from which dwelling information for the household is obtained. Counts are based on place of enumeration, ie, the place at which the person is counted on Census night, which may not be where he/she usually lives. The Australian Census of Population and Housing collects a range of demographic, social, and economic information on Census Night. All persons and dwellings in Australia and the external Territories of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) islands on Census Night are counted, excluding diplomats, their families and diplomatic dwellings, and visitors from overseas who are not required to undergo migration formalities, such as foreign crews on ships. Visitors to Australia are counted regardless of how long they have been in the country or how long they plan to stay. Australian residents out of the country on census night are out of the scope of the census. Results provide a reliable basis to estimate the population for each state and territory and local government area for electoral purposes and distribution of government funds. The census also provides the characteristics of the Australian population and its housing for small areas and small population groups to support the planning, administration, and policy development activities of governments, business, and other users. Following the 1961 Census, Australia has had a census taken every five years. Statistics are available for the nation as a whole, and for states, territories, Statistical Area Levels 1-4, and additional subnational geographies. For information on Australian statistical geographies, please visit https://www.abs.gov.au/websitedbs/D3310114.nsf/home/geography . The census uses Australian Standard Classifications where available and appropriate. Where an Australian Standard Classification is not available, classifications specific to census variables have been developed.
