- Summary
- Presents a count of occupied housing units in the United States by tenure by race of householder. A housing unit is a living quarters in which the occupant or occupants live separately from any other individuals in the building and have direct access to their living quarters from outside the building or through a common hall. Housing units are usually houses, apartments, mobile homes, groups of rooms, or single rooms that are occupied as separate living quarters. They are residences for single individuals, groups of individuals, or families who live together. A housing unit is classified as occupied if it is the usual place of residence of the individual or group of individuals living in it on Census Day, or if the occupants are only temporarily absent, such as away on vacation, in the hospital for a short stay, or on a business trip, and will be returning. Occupied rooms or suites of rooms in hotels, motels, and similar places are classified as housing units only when occupied by permanent residents; ie, occupied by individuals who consider the hotel their usual place of residence or who have no usual place of residence elsewhere. However, when rooms in hotels and motels are used to provide shelter for people experiencing homelessness, they are considered group quarters, not as housing units. All occupied housing units are classified based on tenure as either owner- or renter-occupied by race of the householder. In Census 2010, one person in each household is designated as the householder. In most cases, this is the person, or one of the people, in whose name the home is owned, being bought, or rented and who is listed on line one of the questionnaire. If there is no such person in the household, any adult household member 15 years old and over could be designated as the householder. The Census Bureau collects race information following the Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) standards for collecting and tabulating data on race and ethnicity, issued in 1997. Five race groups are used: white, black or African-American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. The Census Bureau also utilizes a "some other race" category. Respondents who reported only one race are shown in these six groups. In the 2010 Census, as in the 2000 Census, individuals who identify with more than one race may choose to provide multiple races in response to the race question. These respondents are included in the "two or more races" population. The Census Bureau included the "some other race" category for responses that could not be classified in any of the other race categories on the questionnaire. Detailed information on the racial classifications used by the Census Bureau is provided in Appendix B of the Summary File 1 Technical Documentation. The U.S. Census Bureau's Summary File 1 (SF1) presents data from the 2010 decennial Census of Population and Housing. The US Census counts every resident in the US every 10 years, as mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution. The data collected by the decennial census are used to determine the number of seats each state has in the US House of Representatives and to allocate federal funds to local communities. The SF1 contains 100 percent of data asked of all people and about every housing unit at the national and subnational levels.
