- Summary
- Presents aggregate estimates of personal health care spending in the United States by type of establishment delivering care (hospitals, physicians and clinics, nursing homes, etc.) and for medical products (prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines and sundries and durable medical products such as eyeglasses and hearing aids) purchased in retail outlets. Source of funding aggregate and per enrollee estimates by state are also provided for Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance. Statistics are reported for the US in total, and by state and BEA (Bureau of Economic Analysis region. For detail on BEA regions, visit https://apps.bea.gov/regional/definitions/. The State Health Expenditure Accounts (SHEA) represent a consistent set of estimates that utilize the same methodology for all states and all years included in the dataset. The SHEA is estimated at the Personal Health Care (PHC) level, ie, the component of total national health care spending that includes all health care goods and services consumed. Excluded are costs of administration and the net cost of private health insurance, government public health activities, and investment in research and structures & equipment. In the SHEA, total US health spending for each type of service or good is distributed among states using various nationally available state-level data sources. In addition, state-by-state distributions of personal health care expenditures are developed for Medicare, Medicaid, and private health insurance. Included are estimates of aggregate and per capita health spending by type of good or service (hospital care, physician and clinical services, retail prescription drugs, etc.). Per enrollee spending for Medicare and Medicaid are presented by type of good or service and per enrollee private health insurance is presented in aggregate. PHC expenditures by state of residence are based on state of provider estimates adjusted for the flow of residents between states in order to consume health care services.
