Summary
Presents a count of firms, by geographic area and industry. For the purposes of the Economic Census, a firm is a business organization or entity consisting of one or more domestic establishments (locations) under common ownership or control. A firm may be a business, service, or membership organization; consist of one or several establishments; and operate at one or several locations. All establishments of subsidiary firms are included as part of the owning or controlling firm. For the economic census, the terms 'firm,' 'company,' and 'enterprise' are synonymous. This database includes statistics published by the US Census Bureau as Geographic Area Series: Economy-Wide Key Statistics. Data were collected as part of the 2017 Economic Census, a systematic attempt to measure economic activity in the United States and the chief source of data on the structure and functioning of the national economy. The Economic Census is conducted every five years, in years ending with a 2 or 7. The enumeration covered all industries classified by the 2012 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes 21 through 81. Not covered in the economic census are the Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing, and Hunting sector (NAICS 11), Elementary and Secondary Schools (NAICS 6111), Junior Colleges (NAICS 6112), Colleges, Universities, and Professional Schools (NAICS 6113), and the Public Administration sector (NAICS 92). The economic census results are based on a complete enumeration of all known employer establishments in some sectors and a sample of establishments in other sectors.
