Summary
Provides the counts and incidence rates of newly diagnosed cancer cases by cancer site; by U.S. region and state (including Puerto Rico); and by sex (male or female). Incidence is defined as only the number of newly diagnosed cases in a given population at a specific time. Rates provided here are classified as Crude or Age-Adjusted. The USCS defines crude rate as the absolute number of cases or incidents in a given population divided by the population in the given geographic area. No adjustments are made when a crude rate is presented. However, an age-adjusted rate is a case or incidence rate adjusted to the age distribution of a standard population to allow for comparison among populations with different age distributions. For example, one state may have a population age distribution that skews older than another state and an age-adjusted rate allows for comparison between these two different distributions. The U.S. Cancer Statistics (USCS) database provides official federal statistics on cancer incidence and mortality occurring within the U.S. Data are annual and provided at the region, state, and metro area level. Cancer Incidence data are collected by the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and the National Cancer Institute through its Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program. Cancer Mortality data are collected by National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) through its National Vital Statistics System (NVSS). The USCS and other cancer data programs allow researchers and professionals to determine U.S. populations are affected by cancer, evaluate existing programs for effectiveness, and identify additional needs of the most affected communities.
