Summary

Reports an index of employer costs for total compensation, including costs for wages and salaries, and costs for employee benefits. The index shows quarterly movement against a base period of December 2005=100. The data are not seasonally adjusted. The Employment Cost Index (ECI) is produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics Office of Compensation Levels and Trends (OCLT), using data from the National Compensation Survey (NCS). The ECI is a quarterly measure of changes in labor costs. The compensation series includes changes in wages and salaries plus employer costs for employee benefits. The wage and salary series and benefit series provide the change for these two components of compensation. Employee benefit costs are calculated as cost-per-hour-worked for 21 benefits, ranging from employer payments for Social Security to paid time off for holidays. The survey covers all occupations in the civilian economy, which includes the total private economy (excluding farms and households), and the public sector (excluding the federal government). Estimates are published for the private and public sectors separately, and are combined in a measure of change for the civilian economy. The data are collected from a probability sample of approximately 50,400 occupations with 11,300 sample establishments in private industry and about 3,500 occupations within 800 sample establishments in state and local governments. The sample establishments are classified in industry categories based on the 2002 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Within an establishment, specific job categories are selected to represent broader occupational definitions. Since March 2006, the jobs have been classified using the 2000 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system. Prior to March 2006, jobs were classified according to the Census of Population. Statistics are calculated in current dollars for this series. Changes are shown by industry, occupational group, union and nonunion status, and census region and division, where available. The reference periods are the months of March, June, September, and December. All indexes have a base period of December 2005=100.
