Summary

Business Tendency Surveys (BTS) - also called business opinion or business climate surveys - are economic surveys used to monitor and forecast business cycles. Covering four different economic sectors (manufacturing, construction, retail trade and services), they are designed to collect qualitative information useful in monitoring the current business situation and plans and expectations for the future. Respondents provide answers on a three-scale options (up, same, down, or above normal, normal, below normal), and data are summarized as net balances corresponding to the difference in percentage of positive over negative replies. Based on collaboration with the European Commission, the OECD developed a system of harmonized business tendency surveys to allow collection and comparability across countries. By construction, BTS questions are formulated in order to exclude seasonal factors. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Main Economic Indicators database provides comparative statistics on OECD member countries and other non-member countries.
