Summary
Data values represent estimates of population prevalence rates of behaviors related to weight control among middle school students. Sample size and low and high values of the confidence interval are also provided. Data are available at the national level, and for states and some large urban areas. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS): Middle School is conducted biennially and collects data on a variety of youth risk behaviors including tobacco use; unhealthy dietary behaviors; inadequate physical activity; alcohol and other drug use; sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection; and behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence. In addition, YRBSS monitors the prevalence of obesity and asthma and other priority health behaviors. The ongoing surveys include school-based national, state, tribal, and large urban school district surveys of representative samples of high school students and, in certain sites, representative state, territorial, and large urban school district surveys of middle school students. Results are not available from every state for several reasons. First, four states (Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming) do not participate in the YRBSS. Second, some states that do participate do not achieve a high enough overall response rate to receive weighted results. Therefore, their results are not posted on the CDC web site and CDC does not distribute their data.
