Summary
Presents the approximate number of people who meet the criteria of needing substance use treatment per the criteria listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th Edition (DSM-5), involving the dependence on and/or abuse of alcoholic beverage and/or drug consumption, but have not and are not currently receiving treatment for it, be it as an outpatient or an inpatient, at any point within the last 12 months. Provides data on drug use, treatment, and mental health state of the U.S. population across regional and state levels and age groups. The data not only provide a snapshot of the overall health of the people, but also inform and guide programs and policies relating to substance use; mental illness; and resourcing needs for treatment, recovery, and prevention. The data is obtained from January through December through in-person interviews conducted on noninstitutionalized civilians aged 12 and older, totaling over 67,000 individuals each year.
