The Annual Survey of Jails (ASJ) provides an annual source of data on local jails and jail inmates in the United States. The ASJ supplies data on characteristics of jails and the jail population using a stratified probability sample of jail jurisdictions. From 1982 to 2014, the Census Bureau collected data for the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) Annual Survey of Jails. Beginning in 2015 data for the American Survey on Jails was collected by RTI, International.
