Summary
Presents the approximate number of people aged 12 and older who have experienced at least one major depressive episode (MDE) in the last 12 months. It is considered an MDE if the episode meets five of nine symptoms as described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5). It should be noted that the measures between adult (18 years and older) and youth (17 years and below) are not comparable, as several questions relating to depression have been worded differently to account for the age of the youth. Provides data on drug use, treatment, and mental health state of the U.S. population across regional and state levels and age groups. The data not only provide a snapshot of the overall health of the people, but also inform and guide programs and policies relating to substance use; mental illness; and resourcing needs for treatment, recovery, and prevention. The data is obtained from January through December through in-person interviews conducted on noninstitutionalized civilians aged 12 and older, totaling over 67,000 individuals each year.
