Summary

Presents value of product shipments by industry. Value of product shipments includes the total value of all products produced and shipped by all producers, not just those with values of $100,000 or more. However, for selected products, this can represent value of receipts, value of production, or value of work done. In general, value of shipments within the manufacturing industry includes net selling value of the products, "Free on Board" (FOB) plant of products, and other miscellaneous receipts. The Value of Product Shipments database is a product of the Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM), which provides intercensal measures on the activity and value of the manufacturing industry in the US. Estimates are based on a sample universe of approximately 50,000 manufacturing establishments with one or more paid employees (or nonemployers that use leased employees for manufacturing) at any time during the year for manufacturing classified in NAICS sectors 31-33. The database provides the total value of shipments at the six-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) level and seven-digit NAICS product class levels based on NAICS. The ASM is conducted annually, except for years ending in 2 and 7, at which time ASM data are collected as part of the Economic Census. The NAICS reference year for this series is 2012.
