The dataset contains state-level returns for elections to the U.S. presidency from 1976 to 2020, as well as county-level returns from 2000 to 2020. The MIT Election Lab sources the state-level data from the Election Statistics (https://history.house.gov/Institution/Election-Statistics/Election-Statistics/ ) published by the Clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives, while the county-level data is pulled from official records from each state. Parties and candidate names are as they appear in the House Clerk report and/or state ballot. For 2020, an additional filter option labeled, "Mode" is added to reflect the mode in which a ballot was cast (e.g., provisional, election day), with "total" being the default mode.
