This measure divides the age distribution into two equal parts: one-half of the cases falling below the median value and one-half above the value. Median age is computed on the basis of a single year of age distribution Census 2000, the 22nd decennial census of population and housing, is the official enumeration of the population as of Apr. 1, 2000, conducted under constitutional mandate to ensure fair apportionment of congressional representatives among the States. In addition to enumerating the population, the census collects data on population and housing characteristics from "short'' and "long'' form questionnaires. The short form contains basic housing and demographic questions.
