Number of households enumerated in the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, segmented by race of householder. A "household" is a person or group of people who occupy a housing unit. Census 2000, the 22nd decennial census of population and housing, is the official enumeration of the population as of Apr. 1, 2000, conducted under constitutional mandate to ensure fair apportionment of congressional representatives among the States. In addition to enumerating the population, the census collects data on population and housing characteristics from "short'' and "long'' form questionnaires. The short form contains basic housing and demographic questions. The long form, completed by approximately 17% of households, includes the basic questions and also covers socioeconomic and additional housing characteristics.
