Summary

Presents manufacturing measures by industry. Measures include employment, payroll, worker hours, cost of materials, value added by manufacturing, and value of shipments. Payroll, value added, and value of shipments are also provided. The dataset provides measures detailed at the 2-, 3-, 4-, and 6-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) levels. The NAICS reference year for this series is 2017. The Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM) provides intercensal measures on the activity and value of the manufacturing industry in the U.S. Estimates are based on a sample universe of approximately 50,000 manufacturing establishments with one or more paid employees (or nonemployers that use leased employees for manufacturing) at any time during the year for manufacturing classified in NAICS sectors 31-33. The ASM is conducted annually, except for years ending in 2 and 7, at which time ASM data are collected as part of the Economic Census.
