Summary
Reports the number of nonemployer establishments in the United States by geography and industry levels, receipts size classes, and legal forms. A nonemployer establishment is determined to be a single site that conducts a form of business service or operation that is subject to federal income taxes and has no paid employees, with total receipts for the year exceeding $1,000 (except for those in the Construction industry). Typically, these nonemployer establishments refer to self-employed individuals, and such businesses likely operate within the business owner's home address. The annual Nonemployer Statistics (NES) database presents the number of establishments in the United States and total receipts of these establishments at the national, state, and county level; in 2016, data at the Metropolitan/Micropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) level were also introduced. The dataset classifies establishments based on the Legal Form of Organization and the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), and also features receipts-size class of establishments at the national level. NES datasets are released approximately 17 months after the end of a reference year, relying primarily on information from business income tax returns filed annually and/or quarterly with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which are then filtered to determine nonemployer establishments and further refined and processed.
