Summary
Presents cost of materials which includes items either consumed or put into production during the year such as freight charges and any direct charges. Cost of materials generally includes the cost of parts, components, containers and the like as well as products bought and sold, cost of fuels consumed for heat and power, electricity, and finally contract work. The Statistics for Industry Groups and Industries database is a product of the Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM), which provides intercensal measures on the activity and value of the manufacturing industry in the US. Estimates are based on a sample universe of approximately 50,000 manufacturing establishments with one or more paid employees (or nonemployers that use leased employees for manufacturing) at any time during the year for manufacturing classified in NAICS sectors 31-33. The database provides measures detailed at the 23 through, 4, and 6-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) levels and include employment, payroll, worker hours, payroll supplements, cost of materials, selected operating expenses, value added by manufacturing, value of shipments, capital expenditures, inventories, and energy consumption. The ASM is conducted annually, except for years ending in 2 and 7, at which time ASM data are collected as part of the Economic Census. The NAICS reference year for this series is 2012.
