Summary

Data values represent estimated population prevalence rates of not being tested for HIV among high school students. Sample size and low and high values of the confidence interval are also provided. Data are available at the national level, and for states and some large urban areas. Prevalence rates are presented by response to survey question, and, when available, by gender, race/ethnicity, and grade level. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is conducted biennially and collects data on a variety of youth risk behaviors including tobacco use; unhealthy dietary behaviors; inadequate physical activity; alcohol and other drug use; sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV infection; and behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence. In addition, YRBSS monitors the prevalence of obesity and asthma and other priority health behaviors. The YRBS uses a two-stage cluster sample design to produce representative samples of students in high schools (grades 9-12). The first sampling stage includes schools containing grades 9-12. Schools are selected with probability proportional to their enrollment size. At the second sampling stage, classes are randomly selected from the list of classes obtained from each participating school. All students in the selected classes are eligible to participate in the survey. To have representative data, the sample must be selected on the basis of the parameters outlined above, and a minimum overall response rate of at least 60% must be achieved. The YRBS uses SUDAAN to calculate asymmetric confidence intervals based on the logit transformation. More detail on sampling design and methodology can be found in the technical documentation.
