Summary
Provides counts of sheltered homeless persons who stayed in safe haven shelters. Counts are measured by US state and Continuum of Care (CoC) and are broken down by demographic breakdowns. "Sheltered homeless" is defined as those who stay at an emergency shelter, safe haven, or are part of a transitional housing program. An "safe haven" provides temporary shelter and services to hard-to-serve populations. The Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR) is a Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) publication sent to Congress that provides nationwide estimates of homelessness in the United States. It is the only data source of that measures homelessness nationwide. It is used at the federal, state, and local government levels to understand its homeless populations and to inform strategies to prevent and combat homelessness. AHAR estimates include demographic breakdowns and detail the types of homelessness experienced. Estimates are based on data collected from Continuum of Care (CoC) applications submitted across the nation into the Homelessness Data Exchange created by HUD.
