Biographical or Historical Sketch
Dr. George H. Young was born in 1909 in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania. He received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry at Penn State in 1932, his Master of Science in 1934, and his Doctor of Philosophy in 1936, both in organic chemistry. As an undergraduate, Dr. Young was active in both academic and extracurricular activities. He became managing editor of the Old Main Bell, the campus literary magazine, and he was also a charter member of the Purple Quill Literary Society and later served as its "Quillmaster." Dr. Young joined the research staff of the Mellon Institute in late 1935, receiving the Stoner-Mudge, Inc. Fellowship on Protective Coatings; he became senior fellow in 1937, and held this position until 1944. He was named a director of research at the Mellon Institute in 1951. In 1945 he received the Navy's Bureau of Ordinance Development Award, and in 1949 served as a United States delegate to the United Nations Conference on Natural Resources. Dr. Young served on Penn State's Board of Trustees from 1948 to 1951. He died of a heart attack on October 11, 1961 at the age of 52.
