- Biographical or Historical Sketch
- The manuscript was one of the most popular histories of England in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was first written in French by an unknown author or authors, and took its name from the fact that it begins with the legendary colonization of England by the Trojans under Brut or Brutus. In its earliest form it ended in 1272, and was later continued to 1333. In another version the accounts of the reigns of Edward II and Edward III were enlarged, and this was first translated into English by an unknown writer in the 14th century and afterward by John Maundeville, rector of Burnham Thorpe in Norfolk. The earlier of these translations was continued first to 1377 and then to 1419, in which shape it became very popular and was largely circulated. Further continuations were afterward added.
