- Summary
- The son of a beloved justice of the peace in Ohio, Jim Petro was raised in a family that emphasized the "service in" public service. When he rose to the rank of Attorney General, he was clear-eyed in his pursuit of justice---until he began confronting the deep problems in a system that had led to the convictions of innocent people. He soon made a politically risky decision: to fight for the exoneration of Clarence Elkins, a family man with no prior criminal record who had been wrongfully convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his mother-in-law. Petro did not know it at the time, but he was the first state attorney general in the country to intervene in a case spearheaded by the Innocence Project, the nonprofit legal clinic that pioneered the use of DNA to prove wrongful conviction. Other high-profile cases soon followed, leading Petro to seek more than case-by-case solutions: he wanted to overhaul the system. False Justice is an action plan, filled with frontline stories and hard data that refute eight harmful myths about America's justice system --
Sentiments like these, too often accepted as "common knowledge," have helped put thousands of innocent Americans behind bars, exposing alarming blind spots in our justice system. Knowing that it's up to us---everyday citizens---to create reform through legislation, Jim and Nancy Petro have built a rousing call to action in False Justice. --Book Jacket. - Subject(s)
