Sir, The subscribers, having taken into their serious consideration, the general utility attending a friendly correspondence among the booksellers and printers of the United States of America, : especially at a time when a change of government is about to take place, such an alteration, as we trust, will give stability to, and promote the interest of, the manufacturing part of the community. ... It must be a matter of sincere regret ... we must have recourse to another country for that very book (viz. the Holy Bible) the printing and publishing of which, dignifies every Christian country where it is manufactured; ... The determination to which we have come is, to present a petition to the general Congress ... to receive such support and encouragement as that honorable body, in their wisdom, shall judge proper to grant for printing and publishing a correct edition of the common school Bible. As we by no means desire that this design should be monopolized by a few, our resolution is to extend an offer of a share therein to the principal printers and booksellers in the United States, ... / We are, sir, your humble servants, [blank] New-York, January 10, 1789
