- In 1867, William D. Smith, miller, bought the Unionville, Pennsylvania grist mill originally built in 1848 by Jesse and William Underwood, and made extensive improvements. Unionville supported several stores at this time. William D. Smith was born in Mifflin County in 1832, and came to Centre County with his father, John H. Smith, also a miller.
