Christian Karl Josias von Bunsen was a German diplomat and scholar. Born in 1791, he studied at Marburg University, and then travelled throughout Europe, supporting himself as a tutor and secretary to scholars before establishing himself as a statesman in his own right. A close correspondent with Frederick William IV, King of Prussia, Bunsen served as Prussia's ambassador to England for 13 years. In retirement, he concentrated on writing scholarly works on the Bible and general history.
